Start-up develops tiny quantum computers that operate at room temperature
Quantum computing veteran Mark Mattingley-Scott is now responsible for business development as well as strategic partnerships in Europe and three new locations in Germany
"The development and manufacture of quantum hardware have the potential to achieve the status of the automotive industry in Germany."
STUTTGART, September 9, 2021 -- Mark Mattingley-Scott is the new head of Europe at Quantum Brilliance, a venture-backed German-Australian manufacturer of quantum computing hardware. Born in the UK, he heads the new European headquarters in Stuttgart, is responsible for the business and is responsible for the expansion of strategic partnerships. One of his first tasks is to set up company locations with highly specialized engineering and development teams in Freiburg and Ulm. Based on synthetic diamonds, Quantum Brilliance will produce quantum accelerators in small form factors that operate at room temperature and do not require cooling with liquid helium, for example. This will make it possible to provide quantum computing power in classical computing systems in the future. The first product generation has already reached market maturity – in the size of a 19-inch server rack module. In the near future, the dimensions will only correspond to a lunch box. The scientific basis of this technology comes from the Center for Applied Quantum Technology at the University of Stuttgart.
Mark Mattingley-Scott has held various leadership roles during his 31 years at IBM, most recently as IBM Quantum Ambassador for EMEA and Asia-Pacific, providing visibility to the tech giant's quantum computing program and driving the business forward. In the past, Mark Mattingley-Scott regularly worked on revolutionary innovations: in 1989 he was part of IBM's core team working on the Worldwide Web, which was then in its infancy, in 1996 he led the team that developed the world's first e-commerce platform, and in 2006 he was responsible for the implementation of the first mobile health platform.
"My goal is to bring quantum computing into everyday life with Quantum Brilliance," explains Mark Mattingley-Scott. "Europe will benefit greatly from a powerful quantum industry – highly disruptive technologies such as quantum accelerators have the potential to give a huge growth spurt." That's why Mark Mattingley-Scott also wants to help ensure that public investment in the quantum computing industry in Germany and other European countries continues to increase.
"Germany has the best conditions in the world to become a leading player in the field of quantum computing – thanks to its strong industry and large number of highly trained engineers," emphasizes Mark Mattingley-Scott. "To put this into perspective, here in Germany, the development and manufacture of quantum hardware have the potential to achieve the status of the automotive industry."
Mark holds a Joint Honours Bachelor of Science in Computing and Electronics and a Ph.D. of Philosophy from the University of Durham in the UK. In addition, he is Deputy Chairman of the High Performance Computing & Quantum Computing Working Group at Bitkom and part of the NATO Advisory Committee on Emerging and Disruptive Technologies. As a senior member of the IEEE, he co-founded and heads the German branch of the Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society (IEEESMC). He is also a member of the IEEE Public Policy Committee. Last but not least, he teaches at various German universities, such as Human and Machine Learning at the Institute of Cognitive Science at the University of Osnabrück or Quantum Computing at the Kirchhoff Institute for Physics at the University of Heidelberg.
"Mark has incredible experience in quantum computing and the commercialization of new, innovative technologies. This is invaluable to us as we build our presence in Europe and specifically in Germany," said Andrew Horsley, CEO and Co-Founder of Quantum Brilliance. "We are thrilled to welcome Mark to our team and look forward to a very successful future."
